Former CNN host Jim Acosta has ignited controversy by interviewing an AI-generated avatar of Joaquin Oliver, a victim of the 2018 Parkland school shooting. The segment, released on what WOULD have been Oliver’s 25th birthday, was produced in collaboration with his parents and advocacy group Change the Ref as part of a gun reform campaign.

The digital recreation, which responded to questions using Oliver’s past writings, drew sharp criticism for its unsettling portrayal of the deceased. Critics questioned the ethics of deploying such technology in public media, while Manuel Oliver, Joaquin’s father, defended the project as a tool for advocacy. "I understand this is AI," he said. "I don’t want anyone to think I’m trying to bring my son back."
